CBS This Morning host Gayle King claimed that ex-Daily Show host Jon Stewart made "such an effort to be nonpartisan" during a fawning interview Tuesday with far-left comedian Samantha Bee.
Stewart, who had secret meetings with President Obama, was called progressive by his own replacement Trevor Noah, and was a fixture of liberal blogs with his predictable "destroyer" segments overwhelmingly targeting conservatives and Republicans, was widely considered a partisan.
The mainstream media reacted with the sadness expected from losing a close family member when Stewart announced his retirement from the show in 2015. Former Obama adviser David Axelrod, upon learning the news when he was the comedian’s guest, tweeted it was an "emotional" night. Obama called him a "gift to the country."
Bee, who has won praise from the media for her furious screeds about Republicans on her TBS program Full Frontal, was treated to a friendly interview on CBS This Morning about her show. Bee has been praised for not hiding her open rooting for the Democrats and criticism of the GOP as some sort of fresh approach to late-night, as if Stewart, Noah, NBC’s Seth Meyers, Netflix’s Chelsea Handler, and HBO’s John Oliver do not voice their progressive views.
Such praise formed the background of King’s curious claim that Stewart attempted to be "nonpartisan."
"You know, Jon Stewart seemed to make such an effort to be nonpartisan, and you and your team seem to have embraced putting your feelings out there for everybody to see. You make no apologies about that," King said.
The word "liberal" or "progressive" was not uttered by anyone.
"I make no apologies for it, because, you know, I feel like we have one shot to do the show that fully expresses who we are and how we feel," Bee said.
Indeed, Bee, as yet another liberal late-night comedian, said the show’s goal was to be one that "really kicked the door in."
For her part, King is an Obama donor who has also said she laughed at the Republican Party during its primary process, wondered if the Clinton email scandal mattered because people at a party she went to did not care about it, and pushed openly on the air for gun control.
