Softballs Incoming: Why Kamala Harris Chose MSNBC's Stephanie Ruhle for Her First Solo Network Interview

The so-called journalist openly supports the VP's campaign, has praised her 'optimism and light' while defending her refusal to do interviews

Kamala Harris is finally doing a solo interview with a national media outlet on Wednesday, more than two months after locking up the Democratic Party's nomination for president. Just don't expect any hard-hitting questions.

The interview will air Wednesday evening on MSNBC, the liberal network best known for comparing Donald Trump to Adolf Hitler. Harris tapped Stephanie Ruhle, the "journalist" who days earlier defended Harris's refusal to answer questions about her policies, to conduct the interview. Imagine that!

During an appearance on Real Time with Bill Maher last week, Ruhle accused Harris's critics of trying to achieve "Nirvana" by insisting that a candidate for president be challenged to explain her policies. "Kamala Harris is not running for perfect. She's running against Trump," Ruhle said. "We have two choices. And so there are some things you might not know her answer to. And in 2024 … we know exactly what Trump will do, who he is, and the kind of threat he is to democracy."

Earlier this month, at the MSNBC Live Democracy 2024 gathering in Brooklyn, Ruhle praised the Biden-Harris administration for saving the economy and scolded Americans for failing to appreciate those efforts. "It has been a great recovery," she said. "The problem is when you're at ShopRite buying London Broil and it's $15, you don't think, 'It would be $22 if I was in Portugal.'"

Ruhle scolded the media as well for their unfair coverage of the vice president's policy agenda. "[Harris's] plan is more pro-business, is more centrist than President Biden's, but what's truly twisted is that people aren't taking the time to see that," she told MSNBC nepo baby Luke Russert. "And when people say, 'Oh, she's super-progressive,' what they're really saying is 'She's a black woman.'" Days earlier, Ruhle went on MSNBC to praise Harris's qualifications, as well as her "optimism and light" and "vision for the country," compared with Trump's "darkness and fear."

Before joining MSNBC, where she has flirted with anti-Trump charlatans such as convicted felon Michael Avenatti, Ruhle worked as an anchor for Bloomberg Television, where she was best known for flirting with financial executives and other corporate titans, as well as for wearing athleisure and working out in the studio like a crazy person. In 2019, the Wall Street Journal reported that Ruhle, who is married to a wealthy banking executive, had an inappropriate relationship with Under Armour CEO Kevin Plank, who is also married.

Wednesday's interview on MSNBC will mark the second time this month that Harris has answered questions from a media personality who openly supports her candidacy. The VP took part in a livestream event last week with billionaire tycoon Oprah Winfrey, who spoke at the Democratic convention. "If somebody breaks into my house, they're getting shot," Harris said. "Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha."
