CNN Panel of Democrats Don't Support Biden: 'His Time Is Done'

March 5, 2019

A group of Democratic voters who had supported Hillary Clinton in 2016 rejected former Vice President Joe Biden's bid for the presidency during a Tuesday morning panel on CNN's "New Day."

"How many of you would like to see Joe Biden get in?" co-host Alisyn Camerota asked the panel. "Show of hands?"

No one raised their hands. Multiple people shook their heads.

"What's happening?" Camerota said.

"His time is done," Democrat Carol Evans replied.

Democrat Russell Banks expanded on her point.

"I'll be honest, I used to think like, you know—because obviously he was riding the Obama wave, and I thought he was the person that would unite the party, but to be honest, you know, Senator Biden really comes from kind of the good-old-boy politics of the past," he said.

Democrat Owen Evans agreed with Banks's point.

"I don't think Joe Biden represents that new thing that we need," he said. "We need a new economy, we need a new politics, and we need someone different."

Instead, the panel voiced enthusiasm for progressive candidates such Sens. Cory Booker (D., N.J. ), Kamala Harris (D., Calif.), and Bernie Sanders (I., Vt.).

Biden has not yet announced that will enter the 2020 presidential race. He still holds a shaky lead over the field in most polls, and his decision will affect whether former Virginia Gov. Terry MacAuliffe and former New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg enter the race, according to a Politico report.

Biden's viability as a candidate came into question when he called Vice President Mike Pence "a decent guy" in a speech last week. The comment drew criticism from the more progressive wing of the party, with actress Cynthia Nixon tweeting at Biden: "You’ve just called America’s most anti-LGBT elected leader ‘a decent guy.'"

"Please consider how this falls on the ears of our community," she added.

Biden apologized for his comment and walked back his original comment about Pence.
