Rubio on Tax Reform: ‘I Just Can't Imagine Not Getting It Done'

October 26, 2017

Sen. Marco Rubio (R., Fla.) said Thursday he's confident that tax reform will get done by the end of the year, even though it won't be easy.

Comprehensive tax reform has not passed Congress since the Reagan Administration, and it has emerged as a key agenda item for the Republican congressional majority. President Donald Trump has also pledged to sign it, and Rubio said it won't be an easy lift but it needs to be done.

"It’s not going to be easy, and it shouldn’t be easy," Rubio said.

"Tax reform is big and important, and so it should be hard and it should be debated, and it should be well understood, and we don't want any unintended consequences," he added.

When asked by Fox News' Neil Cavuto if he was confident about tax reform getting done by the end of the year, Rubio said he was and expressed a commitment to the importance of tax reform.

Despite the difficulties of tax reform, Rubio is confident Congress can achieve it.

He said he "can't imagine not getting it done" because the people have elected Republicans to majorities in the House and Senate along with a new president, all of whom support tax reform.

"But I'm confident we can it done because, I just can't imagine not getting it done," Rubio added. "Why would you elect people to majorities to the House and Senate and the White House who support tax reform—and then they can't do tax reform?"

If Congress is unable to pass tax reform Rubio believes voters will begin asking what is the point of supporting Republicans, who have so far failed to deliver on other key items, such as health care reform.

"I think people will have a reason to ask, ‘Well then what the point?'" Rubio Said. "I just can't imagine not doing it."
