New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo expressed support Tuesday afternoon for bringing the UFC to Madison Square Garden after the company pledged to bring $28 million in business to the state.
"I think it’s something that should be pursued, definitely," he said. "It’s about jobs."
New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman is now the most prominent Democrat in the state to oppose lifting the ban on mixed martial arts in New York State.
Labor union UNITE HERE—one of Schneiderman’s largest campaign contributors—has actively fought to damage the UFC economically because the union has been unsuccessful at organizing casinos owned by Fertitta and his brother.
The UFC was pleased with the governor's newly discovered MMA support. Co-owner Lorenzo Fertitta said that he was "pleased that the governor recognizes the enormous positive economic impact" that would come from hosting UFC events in New York City, as well as upstate New York.
