Spicer Hasn't Spoken to Trump About 'Level of Confidence' in Sessions

June 6, 2017

White House press secretary Sean Spicer declined to comment on President Donald Trump's confidence in Attorney General Jeff Sessions on Tuesday, saying that he had not spoken to Trump about the issue.

Spicer faced questions on Trump's confidence following a Monday New York Times article claiming that Trump had "grown sour" on the attorney general. Spicer said that he had not consulted with the president on his "level of confidence" in Sessions.

"I have not had a discussion with him about that," Spicer said.

The reporter pressed Spicer further.

"You can't say that he has confidence in his attorney general?" the reporter asked.

"I said I have not had a discussion with him on the question," Spicer said. "If I haven't had a discussion with him about a subject, I tend not to speak about it."

The Times article had cited tweets from the president in which he attacked the Justice Department over its management of the administration's "travel ban."

"The Justice Dept. should have stayed with the original Travel Ban, not the watered down, politically correct version they submitted to S.C," Trump wrote.
