Continetti: Trump's Unpopularity in Blue Parts of Country Limits Economy's Political Benefit

January 29, 2018

Washington Free Beacon editor in chief Matthew Continetti said Monday that President Donald Trump is not benefitting politically from economic gains in places where people voted for Hillary Clinton.

On MSNBC’s "Meet the Press Daily," USA Today’s Susan Page said President Donald Trump’s attitude toward law enforcement agencies was creating distrust even though economic results are positive. She pointed out that about two out of three Americans polled said the country is on the wrong track, and Continetti said Trump’s image contributes to that attitude on the left.

"Well, I think part of it is Donald Trump," Continetti said with a laugh. "The truth is, a lot of the economic gains that happened as part of the Trump boom have gone to the areas of the country that voted for Hillary Clinton."

Stock market gains under the Trump administration have been dramatic, with the Dow Jones climbing almost 7,000 points since he was inaugurated. Continetti said the results of the economy in the first year of Trump's presidency have been mixed, with some of those who voted for Trump in 2016 experiencing a slower recovery.

"You have this weird mix of results where the people who are hurting last year and in 2016, their recovery is slower than those who actually are against Trump for political reasons and don't like him personally," Continetti said. "I think that contributes to those numbers."
