Earlier this week, the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC) called Iraq War veteran Maj. Lee Zeldin a "coward," and even made this cool photoshop of Zeldin as the Cowardly Lion from the Wizard of Oz:

Zeldin is running for Congress against Democratic incumbent Tom Bishop in New York's 1st district. He hit back at Marc Brumer, the DCCC flak who tweet out that photo, in an appearance on "Fox and Friends" this morning:

"You have some liberal Democrat hack who is hiding behind his Twitter account, stuffs his face with cheese doodles, sending out press releases on DCCC letterhead," Zeldin said, describing the attack as "shameful."

When the Daily Caller asked Brumer to comment on his use of the word "coward," he doubled down, saying: "Why won’t Zeldin admit where he stands on the Ryan Budget?"

Today, the NRCC announced that it was ordering a book about the Army’s 82nd Airborne Division, in which Zeldin served, for DCCC chairman Steve Israel.

"It’s been two days since Steve Israel’s DCCC called Iraq War veteran Lee Zeldin a ‘coward’ and Israel has not apologized and Tim Bishop has not demanded an apology of him," NRCC Spokesman Ian Prior said in a statement. "Maybe by reading about the heroics of those like Lee Zeldin who served in the 82nd Airborne Bishop will be able to muster up an ounce of courage and demand that Israel immediately apologize."

Congressman Bishop is a former university provost.
