Maxine Waters Receives Standing Ovation at MTV Awards Show

May 8, 2017

California Democratic Rep. and self-identified millennial Maxine Waters received a standing ovation at Sunday night's MTV Movie and TV Awards.

Waters took the stage at the awards show alongside actress Tracee Ellis Ross. The two women presented the award for "Best Fight Against the System" to the critically acclaimed movie "Hidden Figures."

The audience, including notable political figures like left-leaning comedian Trevor Noah, gave Waters a warm reception. Ellis thanked Waters for "your voice and how you use it."

"I will take this moment to go off-script," Ross said, "and say Congresswoman Maxine Waters, thank you for your work. Thank you for your voice and how you use it. And thank you for being an extraordinary example for all of us, especially in these times."

Waters has been an outspoken critic of President Trump, repeatedly calling for his impeachment, calling him a "disgusting, poor excuse of a man," and saying that he should resign as a "favor" to the country. She has also sought to boost her image among millennials, pledging to be "Auntie Maxine" to young, politically active people.

MTV, in an effort to make its awards show more progressive, turned its former "Best Fight" award into the "Best Fight Against the System" award. It also gave acting awards in genderless categories.
