Luntz: Trump Is Back in the Race

October 9, 2016

Pollster Frank Luntz spoke with a focus group Sunday after Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton had their second debate and came to the conclusion that Trump is now back in the race.

Luntz asked the members of the focus group, who were all undecided voters before the debate, who they felt had the biggest impact on their potential vote more. A far larger majority of the group said Trump did.

Luntz then passed a microphone to the members of the focus group and asked them to give a word or phrase related to Trump's performance.

"Still feel he's skirting the issues," "I feel he's much improved," "Calm and strong," "He had practice," "He seemed more presidential," and "Much improved," were some of the answers from the focus group.

Luntz then asked for a word or phrase from members of the focus group over Clinton's performance.

"Inclusive," "I still think she sounds disingenuous," "frustrated," "not worthy of my vote," "same old same old," and "typical," were some of the answers related to Clinton, mostly negative.

After Luntz talked some more about Trump's sexually explicit comments from 11 years ago, Luntz said how he thought Trump's campaign was back in force.

"I have to acknowledge something here: I thought that it was all over for Donald Trump and when these people walked in here, I was pretty sure of it," Luntz said. "Based on their response, I have to change my mind. I actually think that tonight was so significant that he is back in this race."

Luntz also tweeted out how the members of the focus group have changed their minds from the beginning of the debate to now.
