Michelle Obama Takes Shot at Hillary’s ‘3 A.M. Phone Call’ Ad During Karaoke Video

July 22, 2016

First Lady Michelle Obama appeared to take a subtle shot at Hillary Clinton this week, referencing an attack ad the current presumptive Democratic nominee ran against her husband in 2008.

"That’s the 3 a.m. phone call you’ll be prepared for," Obama said on an episode of Carpool Karaoke with James Corden aired Wednesday night.

Obama seemed to be referencing a 2008 campaign ad that Clinton ran against her husband, then-Sen. Barack Obama (D., Ill.), asking voters who they would rather have answer the phone at 3 a.m. when something is going wrong in the world.

The ad shows children sleeping in bed with a phone ringing throughout the duration of the ad. The end of the ad shows Clinton finally picking up the phone.

"It’s 3 a.m. and your children are safe and asleep," a voice narrated. "But, there’s a phone in the White House and it’s ringing. Something’s happening in the world. Your vote will decide who answers that call, whether it’s someone who already knows the world’s leaders, knows the military, someone tested and ready to lead in a dangerous world. It’s 3 a.m. and your children are safe and asleep. Who do you want answering the phone?"

Obama and Corden were joking about having a 24-hour chef on staff in the White House. Obama insisted that this service is not used as much as people think.

"You know what, that’s nice, but the freedom that we’ll get in exchange for the privileges and the luxuries, I think–you know, seven and a half years, that’s enough luxuriating," she said. "I can make my own grilled cheese sandwich."

Corden said that was understandable, but he was still pretty sure that he would use that service quote often.

"That’s nice, although, you rarely do that, though," Obama said.

"I would," Corden said. "I’d be like, ‘Mark, the usual.’ It’s 3 a.m. and I want a milkshake and a grilled cheese!"

Then Obama delivered her apparent subtle dig at Clinton.

"That’s the 3 a.m. phone call you’ll be prepared for," she said.
