Trump Thanks Hillary Clinton For 'Free Ad' for Turnberry Golf Course

June 29, 2016

Republican presumptive nominee Donald Trump thanked Hillary Clinton for a "free ad" for his Scotland golf course during a Wednesday afternoon rally in Maine.

Trump traveled to Turnberry, Scotland, last week, where he promoted the re-opening of his course that has hosted the British Open four times. The Clinton campaign took Trump's words to use against him in a national cable ad called "Tested," which airs this week. The ad also displayed years old footage of Trump taking a swing while visiting Turnberry.

"I'll give you the good news, I get a call," Trump said. "I get a call from the head of Turnberry. He said 'Sir, did you take an ad?' I said 'No, why?' He said, 'We're inundated with phone calls from people who want to come to Turnberry.' So Hillary, thank you very much, I appreciate it. Free ad. It's a free ad!"

Trump travelled to his golf course in Scotland a day after the United Kingdom voted to leave the European Union and gave a press conference focused on his business, not Brexit. Trump was asked during the press conference how a weaker British pound would affect his Scottish golf course. Trump responded that it would help his bottom line.

"If the pound goes down, they'll do more business," Trump said. "I think places like Scotland and England, I think you're going to see a lot of activity. I think it could well turn out to be a positive."

According to Trump, the critical Clinton ad only increased the demand for a tee time at the Scottish golf resort.
