Liberal Comedians Roast Clinton Over Book Rehashing 2016 Election Loss

September 7, 2017

Following the release of excerpts from Hillary Clinton’s new book What Happened, late-night talk show comedians Wednesday jumped on her claims that numerous outside forces caused her to lose the 2016 presidential election.

On "Late Night with Seth Meyers," Meyers ridiculed Clinton's blame of Sen. Bernie Sanders (I., Vt.) for contributing to her election lose to now-President Donald Trump.

"Hey, Hillary Clinton! Don’t blame Bernie because Donald Trump called you names," Meyers said in reference to Clinton claiming Sanders made a lasting impact on her campaign during the primaries. "I promise you, he was going to do that anyway."

Meyers said Clinton was wasting her pages on even mentioning Sanders because he wasn’t going to pay "$17.99 for a book."

"Late Show" host Stephen Colbert took a shot at  Clinton's overall decision to rehash the 2016 election.

"Hey remember the 2016 campaign?" Colbert questioned of his audience. "Back then Nazi’s were just characters in ‘Indiana Jones’ movies and Jared Kushner was unqualified for only one job. Well, if you really want to go back and relive every excruciating detail, good news, Hillary Clinton has a new book, What Happened."

Colbert said Clinton's decision to write the book, and to "let her guard down" at this point, is a "little late."

"It’s like the pilot crash-landing and saying, ‘those who are still alive, please put up your tray tables,’" Colbert said.

"If there are any diehard Hillary fans out there, you can see her in-person when she goes on her book tour to spots like Michigan and Wisconsin," Colbert said of Clinton’s book tour. "Again, a little late to be going to Michigan and Wisconsin."

On "Jimmy Kimmel Live!," Kimmel began to speak about Clinton, and was immediately met with applause from the audience. However, he continued with some not-so-nice words directed towards Clinton, her "ill-fated" run for the presidency, and her book.

"I was just thinking to myself this morning: ‘I would love to relive that magical election of 2016,’" Kimmel said. "It’s like reading a book about why the Titanic sank while you’re sitting at the bottom of the ocean."

Kimmel specifically referred to the excerpt released where Clinton attacked Sanders for "irreparably damaging her campaign."

"The big takeaway from this book is the aim Mrs. Clinton takes at Bernie Sanders. She blames him and his supporters for irreparably damaging her campaign," Kimmel paraphrased. "She says he isn't even a Democrat, and wonders why he would even run for the Democratic nomination, which is a very good question that should have been asked two years ago. But, I guess, it didn’t come up until now."

At the end of Kimmel’s segment, he ran a parody advertisement for the book. The "trailer" ended with a new book title developed by his team: "It’s the F***er Bernie’s Fault."

"At least she’s talking responsibility," Kimmel sarcastically said.

Although the comedians were critical of Clinton, they also expressed sympathy for her position, and further shifted blame for her election loss elsewhere.

"Bernie is not the reason you lost. You know how I know that?" Meyers said. "You beat Trump by three million votes. If you want to blame something ancient, blame the electoral college."

"All in all, Hillary’s book is a sobering look at how easily people can be taken in by unrealistic promises," Colbert said.
