Washington Free Beacon reporter Elizabeth Harrington called German Chancellor Angela Merkel's open border policy to refugees "disastrous" during an appearance Tuesday night on the Fox Business Network.
Harrington spoke with former Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer and host Charles Payne about immigration and Merkel's proposed nationwide ban on full-face Islamic veils, which she called for while delivering a speech Tuesday to her center-right Christian Democratic Union party.
Payne said Merkel's controversial idea to prohibit burkas in public is ironic because the chancellor opened Germany's borders to nearly one million predominantly Muslim asylum seekers last year.
"Is it too little too late with Angela Merkel?" Payne asked.
"I think her policies have been disastrous for Germany. I think you see these European nations really struggling with these very leftist policies of open borders, which is something Hillary Clinton also supported," Harrington said.
Harrington noted that open borders pose a significant problem for Merkel, who is running for a fourth term in Germany's 2017 elections.
"If you don't have borders and don't respect the law, you're not really going to have a country anymore, and that's why they are having big problems within Europe," she said. "What cultural identity do they have there? They don't respect the laws and value the freedoms we have."
"The dreams of open borders, [a] one world society is crumbling," Payne added.
Harrington rounded out the interview, saying, "Luckily American voters rejected it."
