Finney on Leaked Audio: Clinton Was Saying ‘We Have to Be Patient’ With Millennials

October 3, 2016

Hillary Clinton campaign spokeswoman Karen Finney said Sunday that Clinton was saying "we have to be patient" with millennials in the leaked audio in which she described young Bernie Sanders supporters as economically frustrated people "living in their parents’ basement."

In the audio of a fundraising event from February first revealed by the Washington Free Beacon, Clinton criticized her then-primary opponent Sanders for delivering a "false promise" to the millennial voters who supported him by huge margins over her.

"Some are new to politics completely, they’re children of the great recession and they are living in their parent’s basement," she said. "They feel they got their education and the jobs that are available to them are not at all what they envisioned for themselves. And they don’t see much of a future."

Finney told CNN’s Poppy Harlow that Clinton was explaining to donors that millennials were right to feel frustrated.

"Hillary, in that instance, was really telling a room of her supporters, look, this is what these young people—they're frustrated, they're disappointed, they're right to be feeling what they're feeling, and we have to be patient with them, and you and we have to understand why they are concerned about the issues they’re concerned about," Finney said.

Clinton also patronized supporters of Sanders in April when she said, "It’s exciting, in effect, to be protesting" by voting for the Vermont Senator.
