After the University of Michigan decided to cancel a screening the Chris Kyle biopic, American Sniper, in favor of a movie about the adventures of a stuffed teddy bear so that some students wouldn't feel sad, the school's football coach and true American patriot Jim Harbaugh took a stand.
The petition that caused the university to cancel the screening called deceased Navy SEAL Chris Kyle a "mass killer" and "a racist." "The movie 'American Sniper’ not only tolerates but promotes anti-Muslim and anti-MENA [Muslim, Middle Eastern and North African] rhetoric and sympathizes with a mass killer," the petition read. "Chris Kyle was a racist who took a disturbing stance on murdering Iraqi civilians."
"Watching this movie is provocative and unsafe to MENA and Muslim students who are too often reminded of how little the media and world value their lives."
Harbaugh, with apparently little regard for the petitioning students' demand for safe spaces, announced on Twitter that the Michigan football team would be screening the movie about the most deadly sniper in American history. He said that he was "proud of Chris Kyle" and he was "proud to be an American." He also said, "if that offends anybody then so be it!"
The tweet garnered more than 30,000 retweets and over 37,000 likes.
In the wake of Harbaugh's stand, the University caved and announced it would show American Sniper on campus as originally scheduled.
