Sanders: Trump 'Wants Millions of People to Suffer'

July 19, 2017

Sen. Bernie Sanders (I., Vt.) said Tuesday that President Donald Trump wants "millions of people to suffer" after he said he wanted to simply let Obamacare fail.

MSNBC host Ari Melber played a clip of Trump speaking Tuesday after Senate Republicans lost the votes needed for their legislation to repeal and replace Obamacare. Trump spoke to reporters at the White House and told them he wanted to "let Obamacare fail."

"It is beyond comprehension that you have a president who basically wants millions of people to suffer so he thinks that he can win some political points," Sanders said.

Sanders reiterated his previous points that he recognizes Obamacare is not perfect but disagrees with Trump’s approach to repeal and replace the law altogether, Mediaite reported.

"What we need to do is improve it, not destroy it," Sanders said. "What we need to do is ... lower the cost of prescription drugs, save consumers, save the government substantial amounts of money. What we need to do is provide for a public option in every state in this country. What we need to do is lower Medicare eligibility from 65 to 55."

"And then begin the process of doing what every other major country on Earth is doing, and that is guaranteeing health care to all people as a right through a Medicare for all single-payer program."
