A majority of voters in a poll released Friday said President Joe Biden does not deserve a second term, the latest poor result for the president.
Sixty-one percent of registered voters in a Gallup poll said Biden does not deserve a second term, compared with 38 percent who said he does. The number who believed he deserves another term is the lowest for any recent incumbent president seeking reelection at a similar point in their presidency, according to historical Gallup polling. Half of American voters thought President Donald Trump deserved a second term in January 2020. That number was 43 percent for President Barack Obama in December 2011 and 53 percent for President George W. Bush in October 2003.
Pollsters noted, however, that voters' attitudes toward presidents can change in the months leading up to the election. By October 2020, 43 percent of Americans thought Trump deserved a second term, and 50 percent believed the same of Obama in November 2012.
Other findings in the poll included just 24 percent of respondents believing that most members of Congress deserve reelection, while 55 percent believed their own member deserved another term.
The Gallup poll is not the only poor showing for Biden in the last month. A survey from mid-January saw all three top Republican candidates at the time—Trump, Florida governor Ron DeSantis, and former South Carolina governor and ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley—beat the president in a hypothetical matchup.
Trump, the presumptive GOP nominee, leads Biden in the RealClearPolitics polling average, though the gap in that metric appears to be tightening.
