A pair of would-be burglars is recovering after receiving several slaps and bullets from a Birmingham, Ala., auto repair shop owner.

The two intruders broke into the shop around 5 a.m. on Tuesday, AL.com reported. Since the shop had been broken into several times in recent months, the owner had decided to sleep at the shop in order to deter further robberies, putting him at the forefront of this robbery.

Birmingham police spokesman Lt. Sean Edwards said it was after the men jumped the fence surrounding the building that the owner retrieved his firearm and shot at them. One of those shots reportedly hit one of the men, causing him to flee. Edwards said that man was had received medical treatment at a local hospital.

After shooting the first suspect, the owner then confronted the other intruder, slapped him, and demanded he leave the property. He did.

"This incident is the one of the most common types of defensive gun uses," Dan Cannon said of the story. "That is, one in which no one was killed."

"Despite this being one of the most common types of defensive gun uses, these incidents are often not included in statistics about defensive gun uses."
