White House Backpedals on Obama's Knowledge of Clinton's Server

September 10, 2015

Late Tuesday evening Hillary Clinton posted on her Facebook page and emailed her supporters that she was sorry for having two personal email addresses during her time as secretary of state.

In an interview with Andrea Mitchell last Thursday, Clinton apologized that people might be confused with the homebrewed system that she had set up. Clinton again apologized for the confusion in an exclusive interview ABC’s David Muir.

During Thursday’s White House press briefing spokesman Josh Earnest was asked if Clinton owed her former boss President Obama an apology. Earnest responded that the president has not asked or sought out an apology from Clinton.

Fox News’ James Rosen read from Clinton’s Facebook post that her personal email use "was aboveboard" and that everyone she communicated within the government was aware of the personal address. Rosen asked if the statement was correct.

"Well, James, I’ve acknowledged before that most people who are trading emails with someone are aware of the other person’s email address. So I am not surprised to hear that the president was aware of what her email address was because he traded emails with her," Earnest said.

Rosen pointed out that in previous White House press briefings Earnest had said that both he and Obama learned about Clinton’s use of personal email. Earnest backpedaled, saying that those statements only referred to Clinton’s homebrewed server.

Earnest deflected the question by saying that most people are aware of the email addresses that they use and send to each other. Earnest briefly tried to compare the email system that Fox News has for its employees to the system that Clinton had set up. Rosen quickly fired back that Fox News’ system was not the issue at hand.

Rosen asked Earnest if at any point in Obama’s presidency made a comment to any other aide about Clinton’s use of a private email. Earnest responded that he was not aware.
