Goldberg Attempts to Make Clinton 'Feel Better' About Election Loss By Pointing Out History of Democratic Defeats

September 13, 2017

Whoopi Goldberg tried, and failed, Wednesday to make Hillary Clinton feel better about her 2016 election loss by telling her, "Not since 1948 have there been eight years of Democrats, then eight years of another Democrat."

Clinton joined ABC's "The View" to discuss and promote her new book What Happened, a tell-all memoir revealing the reasons why the former presidential candidate believes she lost to now President Donald Trump. The memoir has been criticized for Clinton's tendency to assign blame externally, to individuals including Trump, former FBI Director James Comey, and Democratic primary opponent and Sen. Bernie Sanders (I., Vt.).

After Clinton was asked by co-host Joy Behar if she cried over the loss, Goldberg tried to cheer up her guest.

"I'm going to leave you with something. We're going to come back with more from Hillary. But, I'm going to leave you with something that might make you feel better," Goldberg added, "Democrats have not done back to back presidencies since 1948. Not since 1948 have there been eight years of a Democrat and then eight years of another Democrat. It might have been other stuff in there as well."

Clinton added Goldberg's note on history to her laundry list of reasons she lost the election, saying, "it's absolutely true that trying to succeed a two-term president of your own party is really difficult."

"One of the first things I talk about in the book – I really wanted to explain, kind of pull the curtain back – whether you're for me or against me, or don't care about politics, which a lot of people still don't despite how important it is, I wanted you to kind of think it through with me. It's absolutely true that trying to succeed a two-term president of your own party is really difficult."
