Trump Endorses Ryan, McCain, Ayotte

August 5, 2016

Donald Trump announced his endorsement of House Speaker Paul Ryan (R., Wis.), Sen. John McCain (R., Ariz.) and Sen. Kelly Ayotte (R., N.H.) at a Friday rally in Green Bay, Wisconsin.

After Trump spoke of the need for party unity, he announced his endorsements, starting with Ryan in Ryan's home state.

"So, in our shared mission to make America great again, I support and endorse our Speaker of the House, Paul Ryan," Trump said. "He's a good man and he's a good guy and we may disagree on a couple of things but mostly we agree and we're going to get it done and we're going to do a lot of wonderful things."

Trump then endorsed McCain.

"And while I'm at it, I hold in the highest esteem, Senator John McCain, for his service to our country in uniform and in public office and I fully support and endorse his reelection," Trump said. "Very important, we'll work together."

Trump has not had a positive relationship with McCain in the past, criticizing him last year for having been captured after his plane was shot down in the Vietnam War.

After talking about McCain, Trump endorsed Ayotte.

"I also fully support and endorse Senator Kelly Ayotte of New Hampshire, a state I truly love."

After praising New Hampshire for being his first primary victory, Trump had positive words to say about Ayotte's future.

"She's a rising star and will continue to represent the great people of New Hampshire so very well, for a long, long time."

After his endorsements, Trump turned back to party unity and the need for Republicans to maintain their majorities in Congress.

"Working hand in hand, we will grow our majority in the House and in the Senate," Trump said. "We need that. We gotta get things done."
