David Brock Can't Say if Hillary Should Release Wall Street Transcripts

February 18, 2016

David Brock, the founder of Media Matters and pro-Clinton organization Correct the Record, was stumped on Morning Joe on Thursday while trying to defend Hillary Clinton.

Mike Barnicle asked Brock why Clinton would give speeches to Wall Street groups such as Goldman Sachs.

"David, you've indicated clearly you know that you have a problem with millennials and others—the secretary has a distinguished career, there's no doubt about that," Barnicle said. "Everyone knows her."

"But a lot of people wonder, especially younger people wonder, why, given their wealth, given their access to wealth and given her indication that should run for president of the United States, why did Hillary Clinton keep going back to Goldman Sachs for more than a half a million dollars in speaking fees?"

"And should she release those transcripts?" Mika Brzezinski asked.

"Look, I think that she made that decision to give these speeches. I think there's ample precedent for it," Brock said, "You know, it's fair to raise the question, but there is ample precedent for it. You look at the money that, for example, Rudy Giuliani made in the year on the speaking tour before he ran for president."

"So, you know, she got fair market value for her speeches. She made that decision."

"As far as the transcripts go, you know, I mean that's obviously up to Secretary Clinton and the campaign. You know, I think there's nothing to hide but I think that could be a slippery slope and we could end up asking for all sorts of transcripts."

"What's your recommendation? What's your recommendation on the transcripts?" Mark Halperin asked.

"That's not for me to say," Brock said.

The studio audience could then be heard laughing following Brock's response.
