The mayor of Fairfax City, Virginia, who supports Hillary Clinton, was arrested Thursday for allegedly giving methamphetamine to an undercover detective in exchange for sex, according to Fairfax County police.
Richard "Scott" Silverthorne, 50, was nabbed in the parking lot of the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Tysons Corner. He was charged with felony distribution of methamphetamine and misdemeanor possession of drug paraphernalia.
The mayor, who has held office in the Washington, D.C. suburb since 2012, was allegedly trading meth for sex on a website used to set up male-on-male sexual encounters.
An undercover cop created a profile on the site and was contacted by Silverthorne within a few days, police said. The mayor said he could give the detective meth in exchange for sex. The two agreed to meet at a hotel, where Silverthorne was arrested.
NBC reported that the Organized Crime and Narcotics Division had received a tip about there being a meth distributor in the area that ended up being the mayor of Fairfax.
Police set up a drug-fueled romp between Silverthorne and a group of undercover detectives, and the mayor allegedly agreed to bring meth along with other men.
[Fairfax County Capt. Jack] Hardin said Silverthorne first met the cops in the parking lot, and he told them he was waiting for his meth supplier, who was running late. Once he arrived, Silverthorne procured about 2 grams of meth, and then handed it to one of the officers.
Silverthorne endorsed Hillary Clinton for president and has been a strong supporter of the Democratic nominee. HeatStreet reported that Silverthorne was announced as one of the Virginia "Mayors for Hillary" in February.
Two others were arrested in connection with the meth-for-sex ring. They were Silverthorne’s suppliers.
Silverthorne is reportedly also a substitute teacher in the Fairfax County Public School system.
