Sanders Dodges on Whether He'll Challenge Trump in 2020 But Lists Swing States He's Recently Visited

July 19, 2017

Sen. Bernie Sanders (I., Vt.) dodged Wednesday on whether he would consider running for president again in 2020 against Donald Trump, although he reeled off a list of swing states he has visited in the past month while fighting the Republican health care bill.

"The View" co-host Sara Haines mentioned a poll showing him ahead of Trump in a hypothetical 2020 matchup. Sanders has said he is not ruling out another run for the White House after his failed but surprisingly strong bid for the Democratic nomination in 2016.

"In the last month, I have been to Pennsylvania, Ohio, West Virginia, Kentucky, and Iowa, in opposition to this disastrous health care plan," he said. "My focus right now is to defeat the Republican proposal and to figure out how we can move to health care for every man, woman, and child in this country and lower the cost of prescription drugs."

Pennsylvania, Ohio, and Iowa were all states won by Trump over Hillary Clinton in 2016 that went to Barack Obama in 2012.

A presidential election is a "long way away," Sanders added.

"I think the American people are sick and tired of never-ending elections," he said. "They would like elected officials to start working here in Washington for their interests, and that's what I'm doing right now."

"I would love it," co-host Joy Behar said of Sanders possibly running again.

Sanders, per usual, received a friendly reception on the liberal program. Behar called him her "hero" and announced she had named her dog after him.
