Kaine: 'I Don't Know' if Obama Lied About Not Knowing Clinton Used Private Server

October 16, 2016

Democratic vice-presidential hopeful Sen. Tim Kaine (D., Va.) couldn't say Sunday whether President Obama lied about not knowing about Hillary Clinton's private email server while she was secretary of state.

Obama said on multiple occasions that he didn't know Clinton used the private server while she ran the State Department. FBI documents subsequently revealed that Obama, using a pseudonym, communicated with Clinton via email. Emails also show Clinton staff debating whether they could "hold" messages between the two after the email story broke.

"Did the president lie there?" Fox News Sunday host Bret Baier asked.

"Well, I don't know," Kaine said. "I actually do not know—if he's communicating by email with Hillary, does he know that it's a private server? I mean, I don't exactly know if I send somebody an email exactly what their set-up is. I don't really think about that much, and I can't imagine that the president, with all that's on his mind, would either."

Kaine went on to praise "wonderful" FBI director James Comey for concluding, after a "very long investigation," that Clinton should not be prosecuted for her use of the server and potential mishandling of classified information.

"Given the depth of that investigation and his own credibility, I think his conclusion probably gets it right," Kaine said.
