Ivanka Trump on Disagreements With Her Father: Lack of Public Denouncement Doesn't Equal Silence

April 5, 2017

Newly minted assistant to the president Ivanka Trump revealed her approach to disagreements with her father President Donald Trump on Wednesday.

On "CBS This Morning," Gayle King asked President Trump's daughter what her response was to being criticized for not being vocal about her positions on social issues.

Taking the voice of critics, King said, "Where is she on Planned Parenthood? Where is she on gay rights? Where is she on the rights of women? Where is she on climate change? It's like you're being held personally accountable for not speaking up. What do you say to your critics?"

"I would say not to conflate lack of public denouncement with silence. I think there are multiple ways to have your voice heard," Trump responded. "In some case it's through protest and it's through going on the "nightly news" and talking about or denouncing every issue in which you disagree with. Other times it is quietly and directly and candidly. So where I disagree with my father, he knows it."

She added that her father always listens.

"I respect the fact that he always listens. It's how he was in business, it's how he is as president," she said.

Trump went on to reiterate the point later in the interview, saying she speaks up often and her father knows when they hold a difference in opinion.
