MSNBC personality Al Sharpton said Hillary Clinton needed to "toughen up" on the campaign trail Wednesday, comparing the potential general election matchup with Donald Trump as Clinton showing up with gloves and Trump with a broken Coke bottle and razor blade.
"She's got to toughen up or have tougher surrogates that can resonate with her base," Sharpton said on Morning Joe. "Otherwise she looks like she's out of touch only because you're in a ring and the fight is out in the alley."
In the clip written up by Politico, Sharpton said that Clinton has been waiting around for the general election fight against Trump, who he called a "bully."
"You can't come in with gloves waiting on the referee to fight Donald Trump. You've got to fight the kind of fight he's fighting," Sharpton said referring to Trump's dressing down of the press.
Clinton has uprooted her campaign and is holding more campaign events in California ahead of a close primary there with Sen. Bernie Sanders (I., Vt.). ABC News reports that campaign aides have dismissed the idea that the new events are more than just scheduling events.
On Tuesday, California Governor Jerry Brown formerly endorsed Clinton, putting aside the tumultuous relationship between the governor and the Clintons. The California primary can determine if Clinton becomes the presumptive Democratic party nominee.
