Sessions: I Would Expect to Not Be Part of Flynn Investigation

April 28, 2017

Attorney General Jeff Sessions said Friday he would not expect to be part of an investigation into ex-Trump national security adviser Gen. Michael Flynn.

Lawmakers say Flynn may have broken federal law by not disclosing his business dealings with and payments from Russia while seeking a security clearance to serve in the Trump administration, the Washington Free Beacon reported. Flynn received more than $45,000 for a speech he gave to RT-TV in Russia.

Sessions has already recused himself from any investigations into Russian meddling in the 2016 U.S. election, and "Today Show" host Matt Lauer asked Sessions if that extended into the Flynn matter.

"My recusal deals with the campaign issues, but I would expect not to be involved in this one," Sessions said.

"You would recuse yourself from any decision dealing with General Flynn?" Lauer asked.

"Yeah—I really don't know whether there's an investigation or should be, and we don't confirm investigations in the Department of Justice," Sessions said.

Documents obtained by the House Oversight Committee show Flynn was warned in 2014 to not accept foreign payments as he entered retirement, CNN reports:

Former national security adviser Michael Flynn was warned by the Defense Intelligence Agency in 2014 against accepting foreign payments as he entered retirement, according to new documents obtained by the House oversight committee.

The inspector general of the Department of Defense also opened an investigation of Flynn earlier this month, according to an April 11 letter released by Democrats on the oversight committee Thursday.

"These documents raise grave questions about why General Flynn concealed the payments he received from foreign sources after he was warned explicitly by the Pentagon," said Rep. Elijah Cummings, the top Democrat on the House oversight committee, in a statement. "Our next step is to get the documents we are seeking from the White House so we can complete our investigation. I thank the Department of Defense for providing us with unclassified versions of these documents."

Flynn resigned as national security adviser in February after he misled Vice President Mike Pence about his discussions with the Russian ambassador to the United States.
