A New Orleans Uber driver is safe after scaring off a pair of armed carjackers by shooting at them with his firearm on Monday.

Two armed men jumped in the 44-year-old Uber driver's car as he dropped off a customer, the New Orleans Police Department told WDSU. The men pointed a gun at the driver and told him to drive. When they reached their destination on Bienville Avenue and North Telemachus Street, the two men told the driver to get out of the car.

As he exited the car, the 44-year-old was able to draw his weapon and fire shots at the would-be carjackers, hitting one of them. The two men exited the vehicle and ran away when fired upon.

The police have not released a description of the suspects, who remain at large.

Uber created a stir in 2015 when it announced it would no longer allow passengers or drivers to carry firearms during trips booked through the company. It appears the two armed robbers disregarded Uber's no gun policy.

Uber spokesperson Jodi Page told The Times-Picayune the company could not say if the driver worked for the company until it had more information. The company didn't give the paper any further comment.
