MSNBC, CNN Covered Upsets by Ocasio-Cortez and Brat Quite Differently

Democratic socialist Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez's stunning primary upset of longtime Rep. Joe Crowley (D., N.Y.) in New York's 14th Congressional District Tuesday invited comparisons to the equally surprising win Rep. Dave Brat (R., Va.) registered over then-House Majority Leader Eric Cantor in 2014.

A look at CNN and MSNBC's coverage of the two wins, however, showed more enthusiasm and excitement over the left-wing Ocasio-Cortez in comparison to handwringing over the right-wing Brat.

Hosts on the networks crowed over her as "badass" (Mika Brzezinski), "super impressive" (Rachel Maddow), showing "tenacity and passion" (Erin Burnett), running "one of the most incredibly impressive campaigns" (Chris Hayes) and "smart" (John Avlon), while those same hosts covered the insurgent Brat rather differently.

Stay tuned to the end for a blast from the past from Al Sharpton, who has since been banished by MSNBC to Sunday mornings.
