Earnest: There Is No One Leader of the Democratic Party Right Now

May 1, 2017

Josh Earnest, former White House press secretary for President Obama, joined MSNBC's Katy Tur on Monday to discuss the Democratic Party.

During the interview, Tur asked Earnest who the leading figure for Democrats is today.

"There is no one person who is leading the Democratic Party right now. That is the essence of a party that is in the minority," Earnest replied before listing all the minorities the Democratic Party is in.

"They're in the minority in the House. They're in the minority in the Senate. They don't control the White House," Earnest said. "Look, if you look across states all across the country, Republicans are in the majority of the governor's mansions. So, Democrats are in a position where we are searching for what our path forward is going to be."

Earnest's comments come after the Democratic Party has fought unity issues. Last month, Sen. Bernie Sanders (I., Vt.) refused to say he was a Democrat while on a "Unity Tour" with Democratic National Committee chair Tom Perez.
