WATCH: Claire McCaskill Says It's 'Ridiculous That the NYT Fact-Checked Joe Biden'

February 22, 2024

Former Democratic senator Claire McCaskill slammed the New York Times on Thursday for fact-checking President Joe Biden’s remarks about the economy.

"It is ridiculous that the New York Times fact-checked Joe Biden on something," McCaskill said during an appearance on MSNBC, urging "every newspaper in America [to quit] doing any fact-checks on Joe Biden until they fact-check Donald Trump every morning on the front page." She called former president Donald Trump "the only blemish on the great country of America worldwide."

"Trump vomits lies, every day, over and over and over again," the former senator, who represented Missouri from 2007 to 2019, added. "It's just ridiculous that the New York Times is doing a fact-check on Biden while they are numb to the torrent of lies coming out of Trump’s mouth."

McCaskill’s comments came after the New York Times on Wednesday published an article fact-checking "some misleading statements about the economy, jobs, and taxes" that Biden made during recent public events. The outlet highlighted two claims the president made that it said needed context, one that was misleading, and one that was false—Biden's claim that the CHIPs and Science Act spurred $640 billion in private investment. The true figure is closer to $220 billion, according to one measure.
