FACT CHECK: 'Normal' John Fetterman Speaks 'Intelligently Without Cognitive Deficits'

Dr. Clifford Chen's so-called medical assessment contradicted by disastrous debate performance

October 26, 2022

CLAIM:

"He spoke intelligently without cognitive deficits. His speech was normal … "

— Dr. Clifford Chen's assessment of stroke victim John Fetterman's health

Source: Public letter dated Oct. 15, 2022

OUR FACT CHECK:

We watched Tuesday night's debate between Fetterman, the Democratic candidate for U.S. Senate in Pennsylvania, and his Republican opponent Mehmet Oz, a Muslim entrepreneur. Fetterman's speech was neither normal nor intelligent. It was one of the most disastrous debate performances in American political history.

"Hi, goodnight everybody." That's how Fetterman introduced himself. It only got worse as the night went on. Here are some of the highlights, so to speak:

On his health: "My doctors, the real doctors that I believe, they all believe that I am ready to be served."

On his opponent's house: "He got his Pennsylvania house from his own inlays from a dollar."

On his stated opposition to fracking: "I do support fracking. And I don't, I don't. I support fracking, and I stand, and I do support fracking."

On the minimum wage: "We all have to make sure that everyone that works is able to. That's the most American bargain, that if you work full-time you should be able to live in dignity as well true."

On immigration: "I don't ever recall in the Statue of Liberty did they say, 'You know, you know, take our tired huddled masses and put them on a bus.'"

On the time he held an innocent black man at gunpoint: "Everybody in Braddock, an overwhelmingly majority community of black. Community all understood what happened. You know, they understood what happened, and everybody agreed."

On college tuition: "I just believe making it that much more. It costs too much, and I believe providing the resources to reduce the tuition to allow families to be able to afford it."

OUR VERDICT:

Chen's letter failed to disclose that the so-called doctor has donated tens of thousands of dollars to Democratic campaigns and committees since 2014, including $830 to Fetterman's campaign since July 2022. (The candidate suffered a stroke in May.) Chen donated $3,000 to Hillary Clinton, a notorious liar. The letter might as well have been written by Dr. Jill Biden.

That's to be expected, because only a dedicated partisan would sign his name to a letter touting Fetterman's "normal" speech and lack of "cognitive deficits" just days before a much-anticipated debate. A medical expert already told the Washington Post that Fetterman's condition "won't get worse," so we can rule out the possibility that he was perfectly normal and intelligent during his visit with Dr. Chen.

Bottom line: Yet another example of a Democrat peddling dangerous misinformation in an effort to subvert democracy. Shame on Chen and his alma mater, the Medical College of Wisconsin. Shame on John Fetterman for refusing to drop out of the race after his stroke and for keeping his actual medical records hidden from voters. Shame on the Democratic Party for subjecting him to this. Shame on the media and other left-wing activists for their screeds about "ableism." What a disgrace.
