Todd: Email Scandal Taking 'Such A Toll' On Clinton's Numbers

September 28, 2015

On Monday, Chuck Todd reported new polling data concerning the Democratic primary that he said indicates a difficult race to come for Hillary Clinton.

"This email story you can see–our pollster just showed the graphic—it has just taken such a toll on [Clinton's] numbers," Todd said.

Clinton, who once had a steady lead, is now in a tough Democratic primary battle that could get even harder should Vice President Joe Biden enter the race.

"Hillary Clinton is in Donald Trump territory in terms of negative ratings," Todd said, referring to a NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll that had Clinton holding on to just a 7-point lead over  Sen. Bernie Sanders (I., Vt.).

Todd described Clinton’s attitude during the interview as not nervous, but understanding that she had to approach the email scandal differently.

"There's different modes she gets in. She wasn't defensive. She was like, ‘OK, I've got to do this and I can't complain about it.’"

Clinton has faced criticism over her private email system because more than 900 of her emails regarding the embassy bombing in Benghazi were not turned over to the State Department even after she promised under penalty of perjury that all relevant work emails were handed over. The "drip-drip-drip" of Clinton’s email saga has shaken voters’ trust in Clinton, which is evident in her poll numbers.

"She was a net positive three months ago and now she’s a net negative," Todd said.
