Tlaib Celebrates on 'Somber' Impeachment Day

December 19, 2019

Rep. Rashida Tlaib (D., Mich.) apparently didn't get the memo from Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi (D., Calif.) that impeaching President Donald Trump is a "somber" occasion.

"Hey everyone, I am on my way to the United States House floor to impeach President Trump on behalf of my incredible district," Tlaib said with a smile.

Tlaib's enthusiastic attitude in the video conflicts with the instructions Pelosi gave to House Democrats. An unnamed Democrat said that Pelosi told them not to cheer and to "keep it solemn."

Tlaib also shared an image on Wednesday of her and Rep. Maxine Waters (D., Calif.) smiling, with a sticker attached to the photo reading #IMPEACHED. Waters has been a long-time advocate of impeaching Trump.

"We think this is a very serious and sad day for the country in some ways, but a responsibility that we could not shirk," House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer (D., Md.) told CNN.

This isn't the first time Tlaib has enthusiastically supported impeachment. Shortly after being sworn into office in January, Tlaib said, "We're going to go in there, and we're going to impeach the motherf***er."

The House voted 230-197 to charge Trump with abuse of power and 229-198 to charge him with obstruction of Congress. The case now goes to the Senate, where supporters of impeachment must gain a two-thirds supermajority to remove Trump from office.
