The Colorado Democratic Party announced via a press release Monday that it is changing the name of its annual dinner to the "Obama Dinner."

The press release states that after several nominations for a new name for the annual dinner that the name change is meant to honor both former President Barack Obama and former First Lady Michelle Obama.

Colorado Democratic Party Executive Director Pilar Chapra mentioned that Colorado had the "privilege" of hosting the Democratic National Convention in 2008 when Obama was formally nominated for president.

"Since that time, both Michelle and Barack Obama have played a pivotal role in advancing our nation forward," Chapra added, listing some Obama policy achievements.

The press release also credits Michelle Obama for helping reverse childhood obesity trends by focusing on health and exercise programs.

"The Obama legacy embodies the values we hold as Democrats, and we are beyond proud to rename our annual dinner after our former first family," it concludes.

The move to change the name, which used to be called the "Jefferson Jackson Dinner," has been discussed for years.
