Former White House press secretary Sean Spicer wore a disguise in transit to his surprise appearance at the 69th Emmy Awards on Sunday in Los Angeles.
Spicer, who resigned from the White House back in August, boarded a flight from Washington to Los Angeles on Saturday morning wearing a disguise to obscure his identity, the New York Times reported. A friend suggested that the disguise may have included fake facial hair.
Spicer also avoided being recognized while waiting to attend the event. He remained in his hotel room, save for a walk-through of the hall where the show was to take place. Spicer's name was also not attached to his script; instead, simply a surname with the letter "S."
Late-night host Stephen Colbert, the host of the 2017 Emmys, reportedly suggested the idea of Spicer appearing on the show and then passed along the idea to his CBS producer, who already knew Spicer from his time as a producer on MSNBC's "Morning Joe." One source told the times that Colbert saw Spicer's appearance as poking fun at both President Donald Trump and Colbert himself.
Spicer's cameo Sunday night poked fun at his debut as White House press secretary, when he insisted that the crowd at President Donald Trump's inauguration was record-breaking.
"This will be the largest audience to witness an Emmys, period!" Spicer said. "Both in person and around the world."

Spicer told the Times on Monday that he "absolutely" regrets his criticism of news reports that former President Barack Obama had bigger crowds than Trump at his inauguration.
