Washington Free Beacon reporter Elizabeth Harrington appeared Wednesday on Fox News with host Neil Cavuto to discuss Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D., Calif.) winning a highly contested challenge from Rep. Tim Ryan (D., Ohio) for House minority leader.
Cavuto asked Harrington whether Democrats are ignoring the will of American voters by reelecting Pelosi to her leadership post after the 2016 elections.
"I think it's very clear by sending Nancy Pelosi back into her leadership position that the Democrats have not received the message from Nov. 8, which is that they have a problem here. They aren't listening to the working class Americans that thoroughly rejected their message on [Election Day]," Harrington said.
Harrington said that some Democrats understand the need for change and want to win elections again, citing how Ryan garnered support from 63 Democrats, about one-third of the caucus. She does not believe, however, that they will get too far as long as Pelosi is still in power.
Cavuto then played a clip of Ryan talking about the future of the Democratic party and the importance of coming together to discuss it.
"Look, I realize it's David against Goliath. I understand that, but damn it, we have to have this conversation as a party because the future of our party is at stake. We are not a national party right now," Ryan said.
When asked whether she thought Ryan's message was resonating within the Democratic party, Harrington said that she does not see it happening.
"I mean, Nancy Pelosi is 76 years old. Steny Hoyer, 77. Jim Clyburn, 76. But they're not giving away their power. They're still the top leaders in the House, and yes, there are real concerns as there should be from the likes of Tim Ryan and others in the Democratic Party. But they don't have the power," Harrington said.
She also brought up 2010, when Democrats lost their majority in the House and began shifting politically to the left, pushing out more moderate and conservative Democrats and losing more seats in both chambers of Congress.
"After they jammed Obamacare down the throats of the American people, a law that they did not want, which is still unpopular, people still want overturned. The party has shifted so far to the left and they have gotten rid of all these Blue Dog Democrats that I really don't see how there is a place for them in the party," Harrington said.
Pelosi received 134 votes to Ryan's 63 in their leadership election.
