Sen. Bernie Sanders (I., Vt.) spent Tuesday night protesting the Dakota Access Pipeline outside of the White House, according to his Instagram.

Sanders posted a photo to his Instagram late Tuesday night of himself surrounded by protesters in front of the White House. The caption of the post was addressed to President-elect Donald Trump.

"Mr. Trump: We are not going silently into the night. Stakes are too high for the future of this planet. #NoDapl," the message read, referencing the pipeline.

A sign held up by a fellow protester can be seen in the background of the photograph that reads, "Tradition is there to keep us safe." Another banner says, "Water is Life."

The Dakota Access pipeline has gained significant media attention due to the protests surrounding the project.

Demonstrators across the country demanded Tuesday that the U.S. government stop or reroute the pipeline while companies behind the project asked a federal court for legal permission to complete it.

Protests expanded across the U.S. after the presidential election because many believe Trump will support construction of the pipeline.
