Washington Free Beacon editor Matthew Continetti appeared on Meet The Press Daily on Monday to discuss Donald Trump's fundraising gap with Hillary Clinton, saying Trump’s efforts to counter the "incredible barrage of negative advertising" by Clinton might be "too little, too late."
Asked by MSNBC host Kristen Welker about Trump's large fundraising deficit against Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton, Continetti said the cash disadvantage has hurt Trump's image.
"You have seen that there's been some closing of the gap in the national polls over the last few days, but the swing state polls still are very bad for Trump," he said. "I think one of the reasons for that is he has been subjected to an incredible barrage of negative advertising from the Clinton campaign. That's her cash advantage is pouring into negative attacks, effective ones against Donald Trump. His resources right now, they're just beginning to decide on which ads to run to counter that. I think it may be too little, too late."
Continetti added he could see former Fox News chief Roger Ailes, who is advising the Trump campaign, helping to repair the billionaire's battered image with a general election audience in the campaign's final months.
"Roger Ailes, remember, played a key part in the making of the president, Richard M. Nixon, 1968, and kind of refashioning of Richard Nixon to make him more acceptable to a general election audience," he said. " I wouldn't be surprised if Ailes and Trump are going to try to do something like that in these remaining days."
Continetti also said that Trump's statement earlier on Monday that Anthony Weiner was a "pervert sleaze" would not hurt Trump on the campaign trail. Trump has assailed Weiner, whose wife is top Clinton aide Huma Abedin, for his sexting scandals since 2011.
