More than $100 million in donations to Hillary Clinton’s campaign has come from donors cutting checks of $2,700 or more despite repeated claims that the campaign relies mostly on small donors.
Clinton has touted the number of donors giving small amounts to Hillary for America, her campaign committee, on numerous occasions since launching her campaign.
After Clinton had won Florida, North Carolina, Illinois, and Ohio during the Democratic primary in March, she encouraged supporters to go to her website and give what they could. Clinton said that most of the donations going to her campaign committee was in the form $100 or less per contribution. "Our campaign depends on small donations for the majority of our support, "she said.
Days later, Clinton touted hitting 1 million donors and expanded upon the small donor claim, saying 94 percent of the money raised at the time came from donations of $100 or less.
However, more than $100 million of the donations to her presidential efforts have come from checks for $2,700 or more.
According to donor demographics compiled by the Center for Responsive Politics, Clinton has hauled in contributions from 119,532 individuals who have given Hillary for America $200 or more. These donations total $181 million.
Of these donations, 55,950 individuals contributed between $200 and $499 for $16,254,493. Donations in the $500 to $999 were made by 30,125 people, giving Clinton’s campaign $18,542,590. Furthermore, 25,937 gave between $1,000 and $2,700 to combine for $36,387,511 in donations.
Clinton’s campaign was given donations of $2,700 or more by 34,254 individuals for a total of $104,979,276. These contributions make up more than half of the $181 million in itemized contributions given to her campaign. Of those, 3,278 individuals cut checks for $5,400 or more.
Hillary for America, on the other hand, has hauled in only $50 million in unitemized individual contributions—or donations that were made in the amount of $200 or less.
In total, Clinton’s campaign has raised $231 million. Just 22 percent of the total amount raised by her campaign consisted of contributions of $200 or less.
Donald Trump, by comparison, has received donations from only 1,023 individuals who gave $2,700 for a total of $3,131,323.
These contributions do not include the amounts raised by both candidates through the month of July, which the Federal Election Commission has not yet posted.
Clinton is said to have raised $90 million in July between her campaign, joint fundraising committee, and the Democratic National Committee, according to reports. The release from the campaign says that the average donation was $44.
Trump has raised $80 million between his campaign and the Republican National Committee.
Clinton’s campaign did not return a request for comment on the donations by press time.
