Dem Strategist: Clinton Sounded Too Lawyerly in Her Interview

September 4, 2015

Democratic strategist Bob Shrum said that Hillary Clinton was "too lawyerly" in her Friday interview with MSNBC’s Andrea Mitchell.

"The first words out of her mouth are not, ‘I’m really sorry about this’—instead, we’re still hearing about convenience, which is not convincing," he said. "It’s just a mistake."

Shrum also said that Clinton did not appear authentic in the interview. "Why can’t she just smile and say, ‘Well look, maybe I can do better, and I will’?"

He said he sees an "enthusiasm gap" for Clinton amongst his students at the University of Southern California. While about 20 to 22 of his students said they support Clinton, only three of them said that they are enthusiastic about her as a presidential candidate.

When he asked his students why they felt this way, one responded, "She’s old and cold."

"I think right now she’s got to transcend this sense of coldness and connect with people," he said.

Shrum wasn't the only one on the network who was not impressed with Clinton's responses. Andrea Mitchell said Clinton failed to answer her question about why she had a private server in the first place, the Washington Free Beacon reports:

MSNBC host Andrea Mitchell said Hillary Clinton never answered why she had a private email server during their exclusive interview Friday, telling fellow network host Thomas Roberts Clinton did not "really define" her reasoning.

Clinton never officially apologized for her use of a private email server, despite being twice asked if she would by Mitchell, but she did say she was "sorry" about any "confusion" she may have caused.

"She didn’t really say she’s sorry she did it," Mitchell said. "When I asked a couple of times why she had a private email server, she said she wasn’t thinking …  So that didn’t really define why she did it, which is the question that a lot of people are wondering. Was it the investigations of the 90s when they were in the White House and was trying to frustrate reporters’ requests or congressional requests?"
