Woke 1 Is Still Crazy

Blast from the past (few weeks): Blackface apologies. Firings for teenage tweets and cultural appropriation. Latinx and 'pregnant people.'

"Woke 1 was crazy," Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D., N.Y.) said in August.

We rate this claim half true. Crazy? Yes. Was? Hardly.

The woke nonsense may have briefly receded, but it's surging again as the midterms draw closer. Democrats are poised to win big despite having learned nothing from their past defeats. Things haven't gotten as crazy as they're going to get.

Here are six crazy examples of woke's resilience from the two months since AOC tried to shrug it off as a passing phase:

1. The Baltimore Rock Opera Society fired its executive director, a white woman, for wearing cornrows at Burning Man last month. The decision came in response to "heartfelt and concerned messages" after the executive, Kelly Carnes, showed off her problematic hairstyle at a company event. The board of directors vowed to revise its anti-discrimination policy to "more clearly address cultural representation and dress."

2. Last week, the Portland Trail Blazers announced Braiden Bell, 29, as their new play-by-play announcer. Bell was fired hours later for making "racist, sexist, [and] harmful comments" on social media when he was 15 years old. The team apologized to fans and promised to "do better."

3. Chaos descended on a gay bar in Pittsburgh last month after a drag performer dressed as Hexxus, the black-sludge pollution demon from FernGully, a '90s-era environmentalist children's cartoon. Everyone involved apologized profusely. "Whatever the intent, blackface is racist and harmful and it is never acceptable," the bar's management wrote on Facebook. Nevertheless, future events have been cancelled on account of "too many death threats."

4. Chaos does not even begin to describe what happened in Massachusetts last month after a beloved watering hole for "dykes, transsexuals, [and] gender freaks" tried to stay in business by relaxing its strict masking policy.

5. The University of California is still battling in court over its new anti-harassment policy, which prohibits the "intentional or repeated use of a name or pronoun inconsistent with [an] individual's gender identity."

6. At a congressional hearing last month, Rep. Ayanna Pressley (D., Mass.) accused Republicans of trying to "end the freedom of movement for pregnant people." She continued her push for a federal job guarantee on the grounds that it would promote "economic inclusion" for "Black, Latinx, and Indigenous workers," as well as individuals with "involvement with the criminal legal system."
