A Turkish politician went into cardiac arrest and collapsed on the floor of the Turkish parliament on Tuesday—moments after delivering a speech in which he stated that Israel would suffer the "wrath of Allah."
Hasan Bitmez, who serves as the deputy head of Felicity, Turkey's small Islamist party, suffered a heart attack following his speech criticizing Turkey’s response to the Israel-Hamas war.
He accused the Jewish state of "crimes against humanity" and stated that the Turkish government "has contributed to every bomb dropped by Israel."
Lawmakers from the ruling Justice and Development Party, which is led by Turkey's president, Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, immediately responded, blaming Bitmez’s health emergency on "God’s wrath," according to parliamentary minutes.
Turkey condemned Hamas for killing civilians following the Oct. 7 attack that left more than 1,200 Israelis dead, but Erdoğan later stated Hamas was "not a terror organization" and called Israel a "terror state."
Bitmez, who is also diabetic, was taken to a local hospital, where he remains in critical condition.
