Hillary to Syrian woman: We're working 'behind the scenes'

Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said the United States is working "behind the scenes" to address the ongoing violence in Syria that has left thousands dead at the hands of the Syrian regime.

After a meeting with Middle Eastern democracy advocates, Clinton spoke with a Syrian woman; audio and video of the exchange was recorded.

"We need your support," a Syrian woman tells Clinton in the footage.

"Yes, and—well, you know, we’re doing a lot behind the scenes to try and get everybody on the same page," Clinton replies. "Very important, you know, people are going off in too many directions."

The United States expelled Syria’s top diplomat Tuesday after other countries, including Britain, France, and Australia, did the same. The expulsion is in protest of Syrian leader Bashar al-Assad’s slaughter of more than 100 Syrian civilians on Friday.

Clinton announced the U.S. would support Syrian opposition forces in April, though she did not describe at length what the support would entail.

Clinton had previously rejected a number of intervention proposals for Syria in March, including a humanitarian corridor and equipping the Free Syrian Army.

In February, Clinton said international troops would not be put in Syria without the Syrian regime’s permission.
