MSNBC host Nicole Wallace speculated on Tuesday that journalists could end up in jail if President Donald Trump wins re-election, and Democratic lawmakers who do not favor impeachment could be responsible. She made the comments during a panel on Robert Mueller's upcoming testimony before Congress.
During an exchange with former Republican congressman David Jolly, Wallace blasted House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D., Calif.) for not wanting to move forward with an impeachment inquiry after the release of the Mueller report.
"If she doesn't think he deserves to be impeached, if she doesn't see an underlying crime in SDNY, God bless her. I wish I had read what she read," Wallace said.
She argued that "commencing an impeachment proceedings is what the Justice Department thought this report would elicit. They were expecting to have to turn over grand jury evidence, to have to turn over underlying evidence in the course of an impeachment proceeding being commenced."
Wallace continued to speculate what would happen if Trump wins re-election.
"And I think that if Donald Trump is re-elected, and in the second term maybe a reporter ends up in jail, maybe one of those investigators being investigated for the third time now ends up in jail, I think that every Democrat that blinked when this document came out will have some explaining to do."
Despite Trump's criticisms of the media, it was his predecessor who repeatedly took legal action against the press. The Obama administration used the Espionage Act to label reporters "criminal co-conspirators," surveyed personal and work-related phone calls of Associated Press journalists, and repeatedly set the record for most Freedom of Information Act requests denied in one calendar year.
