Willie Geist Dings Clinton for Still Not Visiting Baton Rouge

October 7, 2016

MSNBC host Willie Geist dinged Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton on Friday for not visiting flood-ravaged Baton Rouge, La. weeks after the flood lines had receded.

The panel had been talking about the politics of natural disasters and mentioned President Obama visiting hurricane-hit New Jersey and President George W. Bush’s infamous flyover of New Orleans and the devastation caused by Hurricane Katrina.

"After severe flooding in the Deep South this summer, President Obama was criticized for remaining on vacation in Martha’s Vineyard while Louisiana residents were under water," Geist said. "The Republican presidential ticket Donald Trump and Mike Pence made a trip to Baton Rouge to survey the flood damage. Hillary Clinton said that she would visit ‘when the presence of a political campaign will not disrupt the response,’ but seven weeks later now, Hillary Clinton still has not visited that area."

The Clinton campaign had plans to run millions of dollars of campaign ads on The Weather Channel in the key swing state of Florida as Hurricane Matthew was ready to make landfall. The campaign faced harsh criticism for taking advantage of the situation as Floridians were glued to the channel as Matthew inched closer to hitting the state.

The campaign has since delayed running the ads.

Clinton has not held any public events for the past week and has been preparing for the presidential debate scheduled for Sunday evening.
