A longtime friend of the Trumps said in a new Vanity Fair article that First Lady Melania Trump never intended to become first lady and didn’t want the role, stating it "wasn’t her thing."

The Vanity Fair piece by Sarah Ellison quoted early Trump adviser Roger Stone, who said Melania was the one who told her husband to "either run or don’t run."

However, one unidentified "longterm friend" of the Trumps told Ellison that Melanie didn’t really think it was going to happen in the end.

"This isn’t something she wanted and it isn’t something he ever thought he’d win," the friend told Ellison. "She didn’t want this come hell or high water. I don’t think she thought it was going to happen."

The claims come following rumors that Melania Trump never wanted the position and almost resented the title. However, the first lady and her team have objected to all claims of the sort.

CNN reporter Kate Bennett reached out to a spokeswoman for the first lady regarding the article, and was met with opposition.

"Once again part of the liberal media, this time Vanity Fair, has written a story riddled with unnamed sources and false assertions," the spokeswoman wrote in response to Bennett. "As a magazine tailored to women it is shameful that they continue to write salacious and false stories meant to demean Mrs. Trump, rather than focus on her positive work as First Lady and a supportive wife and mother."

"As has been stated on the record many times before, she is honored by her role," the spokeswoman concluded.
