Sen. Perdue Defends Sessions on the Senate Floor

March 2, 2017

Sen. David Perdue (R., Ga.) took to the Senate floor on Thursday to defend Attorney General Jeff Sessions. The former Alabama Senator came under scrutiny after it was learned that he had met with Russian Ambassador Sergei Kislyak during the general election.

"We have literally reached the point where members of this body are slandering former colleagues for having and taking the same opportunities afforded to them," Perdue said.

"This morning my colleague, the senior Senator from Missouri, tweeted that she had never 'ever' met with or taken a call from the Russian ambassador, but her own Twitter account proved that she has at least twice in the last four years," he continued. "Thirty members as a matter of fact of this body...met with the Russian ambassador and ambassadors from other nations in 2015."

Perdue continued his defense of his former colleague in a written statement.

"Attorney General Jeff Sessions is a good man and has dedicated his entire career to upholding and enforcing our country’s laws and I have full confidence in him in his role as Attorney General. Meetings with ambassadors and foreign leaders are a shared responsibility of Senators who oversee defense and foreign policy issues. There is nothing unusual here at all, however, there is something unusual about Democrats’ attempt to mislead the public and undermine the character of their former colleague, Jeff Sessions. The Democrats are clearly focused on distracting and undermining the Senate from getting President Trump’s full team in place so we can get to work for the American people."
